My daily routine consists of reading/checking about 30+ blogs which relate to pirate politics, this includes infopolicy by Rick Falkvinge1 as well as Andis Blog by Andi Popp2. Reading those blogs is a pleasure, but sometimes I do miss the in-depth analysis of a quarterly publication where pirate politics could be analyzed and developed in a more detailed fashion. We, the pirates, live in a fast-pacing world which we call the internet, but this does not mean that we won’t have the time to read longer articles and to favor sometimes the collaboration between authors in a reviewed journal. Thus I have a proposal to make, let’s publish a quarterly journal called pirated politics!
My idea for the journal is to be published quarterly in English language and to focus in every edition on one main topic and to try to describe the eventual problems and propose solutions in that area. We could have one on copyright where different authors from different countries could describe their system, so that it would be easier to compare them or to find solutions. The journal would allow us to create a resource where we could publish new thoughts for the pirate movement and propose new solutions to old problems or raise new issues. It could help the pirates worldwide to gain a deeper understanding than single blogposts could do. It will also allow conference organizers to spread their proceedings and results to a larger audience if there are any which could bring forward the pirate movement as a whole.
The proposed journal would be naturally published entirely under a Creative Commons license and could be copied and distributed free of charge by whomever. I’m still thinking about perhaps printing a small quantity for offline distribution and reading as well for shelve decoration.
Currently I do have this idea and during the upcoming PPI conference in Friedrichshafen3 I will try to win over some authors for a first issue I plan to finalize for July 2011. This issue could look like http://d.sven.lu/pirated_politics/cover-prop-1.pdf (PDF, first mockup, nothing finalized yet).
What do you think? Would you be willing to help? If so, please drop me a Mail at journal@sven.lu or leave a comment.
P.S.: Nothing is set in stone yet, so if you are interested in helping out we can discuss almost anything
